Interviewee- Author Pamela C. Nwokeji
My name is Pamela C. Nwokeji. I am an African American poet, writer, and author of "Lilac Bush" which is a new book combining a poetic memoir with a voice of concern for the societal state of today’s African American culture. I was born and raised in Boston, Massachusetts. In my book, I recall joyful experiences growing up in Roxbury, as well as honest, poetic descriptions of events that have directly affected me and my loved ones. I share these experiences with readers with the hope that they can become a catalyst for change in the lives of others. Through my poetry, I give readers encouragement and lead them to a path of success through education, hard work, and perseverance. I also share my spiritual journey and the strength I receive through my relationship with God.
What is the title(s) of your books?
Lilac Bush: A Poetic Journey and Cultural Awakening for Future Generations
When did you first realize you wanted to be a writer, what is inspired you?
I’ve always known I would write a book but did not know when or how it would come about. But due to a few recent personal events in my life, I feel that God called me to write "Lilac Bush".
Do you have a favorite scripture or quote?
I love, and have always loved, Romans chapter 8 which describes the depth of God’s love for us. Nothing can separate us from God’s love:
Romans 8
37 No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons,[k] neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.
How long does it take you to write a book?
Two years
What is your work schedule like when you're writing?
I find that when I wake early in the morning, my mind is free and clear from all distractions. It is then that I feel most open to messages the Spirit of God lays on my heart and mind to write.
Are you self-published?
Yes
Where do you get your information or ideas for your books?
Life experiences
When did you write your first book?
My first book, "Lilac Bush" was published in September 2021.
What was one of the most surprising things you learned in creating your books?
Writing is easy, enjoying and fulfuilling. Publishing was a challenge and a great learning experience.
How many books have you written? Which is your favorite and why?
I've written one book so far, "Lilac Bush". I will write more when God inspires me to.
Do you have any suggestions to help the inspired writers become a better writer? If so, please state.
Write on subject-matter you are passionate about and writing will be easy.
Do you hear from your readers much? If so, what kind of things do they express?
Yes. Due to the subject-matter of "Lilac Bush" poetry, there are mainly two extremes to the feedback received; love or hate. Most readers love it but then there are few people who hate it. Truth makes people feel uncomfortable.
